The Australian Leadership Award Scholarships (ALA Scholarships) are long term development awards aimed at enhancing leadership and building partnerships and linkages within developing countries, while addressing priority development areas.
Up to 200 Australian Leadership Award Scholarships will be available annually for high achievers wishing to undertake postgraduate study at an Australian higher education institution.
Participating Australian higher education institutions
ALA Scholarships target those whose chosen field of study equips them to address, research or combat development challenges in their country and/or region. Awardees have opportunities to enhance their leadership capacity and extend their networks.
Selection for an ALA Scholarship is highly competitive. It is based on an applicant’s professional and personal qualities, academic competence and, most importantly, commitment to and potential impact on development outcomes for their country and region. Scholars are required to return to their home country for at least two years after completing their studies in Australia. ALA Scholarship recipients will join an Australia Awards alumni network with strong and enduring links to Australia, the region and further afield. The network will facilitate the exchange of knowledge and information among scholarship recipients.
An ALA Scholarship enables candidates to undertake studies leading to a Masters or Doctorate degree in Australia. It does not include Graduate Diplomas, with the exception of Masters courses that require a completed Graduate Diploma as part of the Masters degree.
Study programs must relate to a candidate’s country priority areas for development. These may be one or more of the following:
- disability
- disaster risk reduction
- economic growth
- education
- environment
- food security
- gender equality
- governance
- health
- HIV/AIDS
- pandemics
- human rights
- infrastructure
- regional stability
- rural development
- water & sanitation
Preference will be given to candidates:
- who have relevant professional experience in their chosen subject area.
- who are in a leadership role or with the potential to become leaders in the public, private or community sectors.
Mandatory requirements for eligibility for ALA Scholarships:
- An IELTS score of 6.5 or above (with no band less than 6) taken no longer than two years prior to the date of application;
- A record of high-level undergraduate or post-graduate academic achievement.
You will not be eligible if you:
- Are holding or have been nominated to receive another Australian government scholarship;
- Have held a foreign scholarship in the 24 months preceding the application
- Are a permanent resident or have applied for permanent residency in Australia;
- Are married or engaged to be married to a person who holds or who is eligible to hold Australian or New Zealand citizenship or permanent residence status.
